The NLL, A a game you should be checking out part 1

The National Lacrosse League, its has been around since the late 1980's (known then as the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League and soon later on the Major Indoor Lacrosse League before becoming the National Lacrosse League in 1998) and many may have seen it on such TV channels as NBC, Versus or Sportsnet if you live in Canada, but have you really seen it?

The NLL is one sport like many that has names that are household in Lacrosse but may not be as well known in other sports, examples being The Gait brothers Paul and Gary, (Gary on left, Paul on right)

John Grant Jr.

or John Tavares (his nephew is the junior hockey star who also is known as John Tavares)

The one thing that the NLL has on many other sports is true creatvity.

Now you may be saying "but Avry! other sports have been creative!"

Not in the way that the National Lacrosse League has been.

How many other sports have the opposing teams come onto the field to the tune of "I'm a barbie girl?"

Thats what the Edmonton Rush did for the Toronto Rock during their game last night at Rexall Place here in Edmonton (The Rush defeated the Rock 16-13).
Another thing that the NLL has going for them is constant "taunting" not allowed by other sports leagues, but it is encouraged in the NLL espically by the PA announcers/commentators!

Here in Edmonton, local FM radio personalities, on 100.3 the Bear Paul Brown, Yukon Jack, and Gillian Foote taunt the opposing teams throughout the entire game over the PA system (lets see this happen in other pro sports) taking shots at former Rush players who are now playing on other teams, making fun of other teams names as they are in the middle of moving the ball up the floor and many other insults.

This story is not over yet, stay tuned for more part 2 of this story will be coming real soon....
But thats all for now, I'm Avry and I'm gone!

Dwayne Roloson the Iron Man and Ryan Moats

Well folks my favorite NHL team the Edmonton Oilers, are in the thick of the things in the playoff race, (in 9th place in the western conference 1 point out of a playoff spot) and they are taking on the Anahiem Ducks tonight and are starting for the 31st straight game their 39 year old goalie Dwayne Roloson! Now you might think that "39 year old goalie making over 30 straight starts?! is the starter injured?" Dwayne Roloson is the starting goalie for the Oil. Roli as he is called by many in the NHL is like fine wine, he gets better with age, right now at age 39 his goals aganist average is 2.76 not too bad for a guy that broke into the NHL at age 26. One problem with Roli the goalie is that he may burnout, well he didnt burn out when the Oilers made it to the 2006 stanley cup finals vs the Carolina Hurricanes, he was injured in game 1 and if he was healty for the entire series the Oilers would have brought the cup back to Canada. Can Roli and the Oil duplicate that 2006 magic, as a die hard Oiler fan and one that follows trends from now and back from 2006, I say yes he can.
Before I finish I want to talk about what happened to Houston Texans Running Back Ryan Moats and his wife. Moats and his wife, were driving to a hospital in Dallas to see his wife's dying mother and apparently he broke a red light. The police officer that pulled him over did not immeditly give Moats a ticket which is what he asked for so he could get down to the hospital to see his dying mother in law. The officer, Robert Powell said to Moats "I dont care" and "I can screw you over" when Moats was telling him about the story, the officer refused to let Moats go into to hospital but did eventually let him wife go in. Ryan Moats did not get a chance to say goodbye to his mother in law before she died.
Officer Robert Powell showed absolutly no class in the situation, nor did he show that he is capable of using common sense.

Oilers vs Blues

Well, the Edmonton Oilers pulled out the shootout win last night and what a game it was! Ales Kotalik scored the shootout winner and Dwayne Roloson stood on his head in between the pipes to help the Oil get the 2-1 to push them into 7th place in the western conference. The Oilers showed why they will be a playoff team come april becuase, they buckeled down when they had to, (but with a little exception on the part of a few of the Oilers D men but it did not lead to much) players like Sam Gagner, Shawn Horcoff, and Fernando Pisani played great offense with guys like Steve Staios playing great D. If the Oilers take on the Wings in the first round it would not worry me becuase, the Wings have never won a series in their posteason history vs Edmonton (The Oilers have a 3-0 record over the wings in playoff series) and the San Jose Sharks were unable to handle to Oilers. This team will be in fine shape come playoff time.

A New USFL?

The title says it all. The USFL is coming back in Feburary 2010, some old names will come back to the League and some new names along with some new rules (ex: 4 points for a safety). I am currently talking with the League's founder Micheal Dwyer and hopefully he will come onto the show in the near future.
Here is the link to the league's website.
